The current condition of the

Landenberg Bridge

The bridge has suffered much neglect and and some botched repairs over the last 100 years.

Underneath, this is the sorry state of the I-beams that support the roadway.

Structural members are rusted and have been shored-up with quick fixes.

At some point the truss struts at the center of the bridge on each side were welded together. The repairman apparently did not understand the structural functioning of these parts since they are supposed to be independent. Since a weld damages the structure of the metal, the struts cannot simply be separated. To function properly they would need to be replaced.

PennDOT says that it is not feasible to repair the bridge and return it to its original condition 100 years ago since replacement parts are no longer available and it would be too expensive to fabricate new ones. So, at this point everyone agrees that at least the supporting bridge structure needs to be replaced.
